FelineSense questions, answered

What the app does, whether it can translate a meow, where the numbers come from, what it costs, and what happens to your data.

The app

What is FelineSense?
FelineSense is a complete care app for cat owners. One profile per cat sits at the center, and every tool hangs off it: a daily feeding and calorie guide for wet and dry food, a 268-item safety checker for foods, plants, household products and medicines, a home-cooked recipe calculator, weight and body condition, stool, litter box and water, and vitals logs, a medication tracker, a vaccine, parasite and grooming calendar, a play log, kitten socialization and home environment checklists, modules for diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, vet reports, a document vault, insurance claims and backup. And AI analysis of your cat’s meows, trills, purrs, hisses and growls. More than thirty tools, on iPhone and iPad.
Is this just a meow translator?
No. Vocalization analysis is one part of FelineSense, and a good one, but the app also covers nutrition, weight, health logging, preventative care, chronic conditions and veterinary records. If you only ever use it to work out portions, check whether a plant is safe and keep records for the vet, it earns its place.
Which cats does it work with?
Any cat, pedigree or domestic shorthair. You keep a separate profile for each cat, with breed, age, sex, neuter status and weight, which sharpens both the interpretation and the nutrition math. Life stages follow the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines: Kitten (0–1 year), Young adult (1–6), Mature adult (7–10) and Senior (over 10).
I have more than one cat. Does it work for a multi-cat household?
Yes, and there is no limit on the number of cats. Every cat gets its own profile, records and targets. When two or more cats are vocalizing at each other, dialogue mode reads the exchange. And the home environment checklist follows the AAFP/ISFM advice that matters most in a multi-cat home: one litter box per cat plus one, and food, water, litter and resting places each cat can reach without passing another.
When does FelineSense launch?
Soon. FelineSense is coming to the App Store for iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later). There is no App Store listing yet, so any FelineSense store link you find elsewhere is not ours. This site will show the App Store badge as soon as there is one.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes. FelineSense runs on iPhone and iPad, which is a genuinely better screen for the charts, the vet report and the document vault.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Mostly, yes. Every record and log, the feeding and recipe math and the whole safety checker are on your device and work offline. That matters, because “is this lily dangerous to my cat” is often asked in a shop or a garden with one bar of signal. The one feature that needs a connection is the AI analysis of a recording.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no login. The app uses anonymous authentication only to secure requests to our backend.
Is there an Android version?
No. FelineSense is built for iPhone and iPad.

The AI analysis

Can FelineSense translate my cat’s meows?
Not word for word, and no app truthfully can. Cats do not communicate in language, so there is no sentence hidden inside a meow. Adult cats rarely meow at each other at all; the meow is mostly a sound they use with people. What a meow does carry is state and intent: a greeting, a request, frustration, a warning, discomfort. FelineSense reads those signals from the recording and the context you add, and gives you the likely signal, the emotional state, its reasoning and a confidence level of low, medium or high. Never a made-up quote. How the meow analysis works · The myth of literal cat translation
Is FelineSense real AI, or a gimmick?
It is real AI, not a soundboard. The analysis listens to the recording itself (pitch, duration, rise and fall, harshness and repetition) and interprets it against published research on how cats use their voices: the meow, the trill or chirrup, the purr, chattering at prey, hissing and spitting, growling and yowling. It reads that together with your cat’s profile and anything you add about the situation. Every result shows its reasoning and a confidence level; we never fake a cartoon “translation.”
Does purring always mean my cat is happy?
No. Purring usually means contentment, but cats also purr when they are frightened, in pain, unwell or giving birth, and some cats fold a cry into the purr when they want feeding. Read the purr with the situation and the body language: a purring cat that is hiding, not eating or breathing with an open mouth needs a vet. FelineSense weighs a purr the same way, with the context you give it. What each cat sound usually means
Why does it ask for context and body language?
Because the same sound can mean very different things. A meow at the food bowl is not a meow in the litter box. You can start with a quick pick (Everyday, Night-time or Litter box), tag the situation from 17 options, and describe seven body-language signs: ears, tail, posture, mouth, eyes, fur and movement. It is optional, and your report is weighed as your report: the sound and body language still decide, and the result says so if they disagree with you. Why context changes everything
Can it tell if my cat is in pain?
It cannot diagnose anything, but it is built to take pain seriously. Cats are good at hiding pain, so a harsh, low or repeated sound from a normally quiet cat is flagged as a possible medical sign. Choose the litter box and the app always shows a fixed warning that a cat straining with little or no urine can have a urinary blockage, which is an emergency. And night-time crying, or any recording of a cat aged seven or older, is checked for medical causes such as an overactive thyroid, high blood pressure, kidney disease, age-related confusion or hearing loss.
Does the app use a third-party service for the AI?
Yes. The analysis runs on Google’s Gemini AI service, called from our own secure backend. The app asks your permission before it sends any audio. Your recording is sent only to produce your result, and it is not kept afterward or used to train AI models.
What is dialogue mode?
A second analysis mode for recordings with two or more cats in them. It separates the voices across a timeline and reads the social exchange: who started it, who is avoiding whom, whether it is friendly or tense, and whether it is escalating.

Health, nutrition and records

Where do the nutrition and health numbers come from?
Published veterinary sources, cited on the screen where you read them: the NRC and WSAVA for calorie formulas, the AAHA/AAFP guidelines for life stages, vaccination and weight management, AAFCO cat nutrient profiles for home-cooked recipes, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists for the safety checker, the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AAFP for health-log ranges, AAHA for diabetes, IRIS for kidney disease, the AAFP for hyperthyroidism, and CAPC and the American Heartworm Society for parasite prevention. No number comes from a pet food company.
Does the AI calculate my cat’s food portions?
No, and deliberately so. Every calorie and gram is computed by fixed formulas in code. The AI is used where judgement genuinely helps, reading a vocalization, and never sets a portion.
How does the home-cooked recipe calculator work?
Five short steps, then a recipe in grams for your cat’s calorie target. Cats are obligate carnivores, so every recipe is built on meat, poultry, heart or egg, with liver kept to about 5 % because vitamin A builds up, and cooked fish only as part of the meat. Cooked extras such as a vegetable stay small. Taurine powder is always added, because cooking destroys some of the taurine in meat, and calcium is added to balance the phosphorus. Every recipe is checked against the AAFCO cat profiles for protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus and taurine. It does not check vitamins or trace minerals, which is why it needs a complete vitamin-mineral supplement made for home-cooked cat food; the check flags it if you leave it out. Everything is cooked, and raw fish is never used. For a kitten, the app tells you to use a recipe from a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Nutrition and feeding tools
How much water should my cat drink? Is my cat drinking too much?
A cat needs about 50–60 mL of water per kg of body weight a day in total, but much of it can come from food: wet food is about 75–80 % water. So FelineSense sets the bowl target by diet: up to 20 mL per kg a day on mostly wet food, 15–35 on a mix, and 30–50 on mostly dry. Drinking more than about 60 mL per kg a day from the bowl is worth a vet check, because heavy drinking in a cat can point to kidney disease, diabetes or an overactive thyroid. Cat water intake guide
What litter box changes should worry me?
Straining with little or no urine, especially in a male cat, is an emergency: go to a vet now, because a blocked urethra can kill within 24 to 48 hours. Blood in the urine, straining to pee, going more often, or peeing outside the box are worth a call to the vet the same day. In the stool, watch for black or bloody stool, diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two, and hard, dry pellets. The app’s litter box and stool logs give each entry a plain verdict. Cat poop chart · Health log and trends
Can FelineSense track kidney disease and hyperthyroidism?
Yes, along with diabetes. The kidney module keeps your vet’s IRIS stage, the renal diet, any phosphate binder and the sub-Q fluids schedule in one place, shows lab results (creatinine, SDMA, phosphorus, blood pressure) against the IRIS bands, and watches weight, appetite, vomiting and water at home. The thyroid module keeps the treatment and each T4 result against the AAFP goal of the lower half of the lab’s range, and watches weight, heart rate and the early side effects of methimazole for the first 90 days. Neither stages a disease or changes a dose; your vet does. Chronic conditions · Cat kidney disease guide · Cat hyperthyroidism guide
Is this a substitute for a veterinarian?
No. FelineSense provides information and organization for educational purposes, not diagnosis. Health logs give plain verdicts (fine, watch, worth a vet call, or see a vet now) and the app never doses a medication. If your cat shows signs of distress or illness, contact a veterinarian.
Can I share records with my vet?
Yes. The vet report produces a plain-text summary of the last 14, 30 or 90 days, facts only and no diagnosis, that you can share before an appointment. The document vault shares individual files through the normal iOS share sheet, and insurance claims export as a CSV. Records and backup
Where are my cat’s health records stored?
On your device. Health records, vet documents and insurance claims are stored locally, protected by your iPhone’s own encryption, and nothing is uploaded unless you explicitly share it or back it up. There is no cloud copy you did not ask for.
What happens to my records if I stop paying?
They stay yours. Every health record and log already saved on the device remains viewable and exportable, and backup and restore keep working. Saved recipes, food-switch logs and insights need an active plan, like the AI analysis. Adding new entries needs an active plan, as do the AI analysis and the feeding, recipe and safety tools. We will not hold your cat’s medical history hostage.
How do I move everything to a new phone?
Back up & restore writes one file with every cat profile and every health record (meow analysis history stays on the phone); save it to Files or iCloud Drive and restore it on the new device. Restore merges: it adds what is missing and never deletes or overwrites what is already there. Vet document files themselves are not in the backup file, so keep your originals.

Price, trial and the care program

What is free, and what is Premium?
Every guide on this website is free to read. Everything inside the app (all thirty-plus tools across analysis, nutrition, health logging, care, chronic conditions and records) is Premium, with a 3-day free trial. There is one Premium plan and everything is in it.
How much does Premium cost?
Premium is $7.99/month or $49.99/year, about $4.17 a month and roughly 48 % cheaper than paying monthly. Both include the 3-day free trial. The app always shows your own store’s localized price, which may differ by region. See pricing
Are there tiers or add-ons?
No. One plan, everything included, unlimited cats. Tiering would mean the owner with the sickest cat pays the most, which is indefensible.
How does the free trial work?
Both Premium plans start with a 3-day free trial, once per Apple ID. Every tool is unlocked during the trial. If you do not cancel, it converts to the plan you selected.
How do I cancel?
Open Settings › Apple ID › Subscriptions on your iPhone, choose FelineSense, and cancel. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
How do I restore a purchase on a new device?
On the paywall, tap “Restore Purchases.” Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, so it will be restored.
My cat has a chronic condition and I cannot afford this. What are my options?
The care program. Email your Support ID (it is in Settings) to care@felinesense.app with a document from your vet showing the diagnosis, and we open every tracking, records and care tool for you free of charge. AI analysis and the four nutrition tools stay with the paid plan. No means test and no financial paperwork. How the care program works

Privacy

Is my cat’s audio stored? Who hears my recordings?
The app asks your permission before it sends any audio. A recording you choose to analyze goes to our secure backend, which passes it, with the context that sharpens the read (your cat’s breed, age, sex, neuter status and outdoor access, any pain, anxiety or medical notes you saved, the situation and the body language), to Google’s Gemini AI service to produce your result. Before upload, the app trims the audio on your phone to the part being analyzed. The recording is not kept on our servers afterward and is not used to train AI models. The profile itself and your results stay on your device; only those fields travel with an analysis. Read the privacy policy
Can I use the health tools without the AI?
Yes. If you decline permission for the AI analysis, every health tool still works.
Do you track me or show ads?
No. FelineSense shows no ads, uses no advertising identifier, and does not track you across other apps or websites. Because we do not track, the app does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission.
What do you do with a vet document I send to the care program?
We read it to confirm a diagnosis exists and apply the grant to your Support ID. We do not need your name, address, income or your cat’s full history. The privacy policy explains what we receive when you email us.

A sick cat should never come down to money

If your cat has a diagnosed chronic condition and the bills are hard, email us your Support ID with a vet document showing the diagnosis. We open every tracking, records and care tool for you, free of charge. No means test, no haggling.
